So I watched the JW trailer again and started to wonder what the actual size of the mosasaur is.

So heres what I did...

I used a human as a scale next to the Shark, and the shark is roughly 12.5 ft long. So I used photoshop to place the shark over and over again, and I estimated it to be 5-7 sharks, which puts it in a range of 65-88 ft, 65 is close to the largest mosasaur, while 88 ft is closer to a Liopleurodon. So obviously its alot smaller than some people made it out to be.

It could be bigger due to different DNA or genetic tampering but anyway, I felt like I needed to share this

Remember that chap, I forget his name, he climbed Everest without any oxygen, came down nearly dead. They asked him, they said, "Why did you go up there to die?" He said, "I didn't, I went up there to live."

Don't mean to sound rude, but Lioplaurodon was only about 7 meters. Walking with Dinosaurs did a little bit of an overestimate there... Also, the Mosasaurus in JW is too big. But, a size being wrong in the Jurassic Park franchise is nothing new. Seriously, they got the size wrong of every Theropod in the original Jurassic Park with the exception of the pelicans at the end. Anyways, nice post though, I do agree with your estimates.

Well firstly LIOPLEURODON is much much smaller than that and the Mosasaur certainly looks much bigger to me but if that's what you measured that's fine.

How far can we push nature before it pushes back?

Thanks for sharing

But I doubt we can pin it on the Genetic Tampering.

It just wouldn't add up.

Maybe its a Larger shark?

There's got to be some factor we're missing here, Or colin just got something SO IMPORTANT, Wrong...

@ Lord of Spinos, The Dilophosaur was a juvenile, the raptors were actually closer to large deinonychus or small Utahraptors, and the Tyrannosaur was the right size. Not sure what you mean.

An average Tyrannosaurus was about 11.5 meters, Rexy was about 14 meters. And they refered to the "Deinonychus" in JP as Velociraptors, so thats the wrong size for Velociraptor. Though I didn't know sbout the Dilophosaurus, I'll give you that one.

An average Tyrannosaur was actually around 12.1 meters to 14.2 meters. Tyrannosaurus has undergone an average size increase based on about 7 (admitabbly fragmentary) remains that would be sized around 15 meters. If you want I can give you a specimen list and even a couple references and papers.

Carnosaur

CompsognathusMember0 XPNov-30-2014 1:40 PMBBC's liopleurodon was thought to be synonymous with the Monster of Arembarri at that time. instead of calling it the MoA, they lumped it in with lio. however, the MoA isn't a 15-18 m giant any more, based on the proportions, it'd be ~11.5-13 meters. anyway, with this scaling issue here, i assumed the shark to be 14ft. this mosasaur looks like it absolutely dwarfs it when it's breaching. taking this into account, i got 38-42 ft. for our big guy here. which, is more acceptable then the 76+ft figure in the OP( no offence) now, taking into consideration M. hoffmani obtained lengths comparable to my scaling results, i think it's very likely. Cheers!

This 12 ft shark was the same length as the mosasaur's head, so that says something right there. I'd put the mosasaur in the 60-80 ft range. M. hoffamani and Tylosaurus are some of the biggest mosasaurs we know and they were around 40-50 ft long.

Carno, are you saying its actually the right size? Because I had a similar feeling it was about right, maybe a little bit bigger.

Carnosaur

CompsognathusMember0 XPNov-30-2014 2:04 PMthe 38-42 foot figure i gave? i think it fits. predominatly because we have no 65+ foot mosasaurs, and i don't think this movie is going to give an erroneous size like that just for giggles

Carnosaur

CompsognathusMember0 XPNov-30-2014 2:05 PMi used a 14ft shark because i just kind of eyeballed it, but it fits nicely

Hmm. Your math is sound. I just checked. Good! Its not too blatantly large.

I agree that it is too big

with that size, the mosasaurus is the worst creation that JW scientist ever made (even worst than diablo rex)

T.rex was much smaller than 15 m, from what we have largest T.rex specimens stopped between 12 and 13 m ('Sue' is 12.3 m long and MOR008 was maybe slighty longer than 'Sue', but more gracile and therefore lighter).

I've read that Horner said that that Mosasaurus was based on upper Mosasaurus size estimates.
